The project presented a unique opportunity to preserve a piece of Australia’s architectural history while creating a home that responds to the way we live today. The existing residence carries the character and craftsmanship of an earlier era, and our approach has been centred on respecting and retaining these qualities while introducing a considered contemporary addition.
Navigating Heritage Approvals and the National Construction Code
Working within a heritage-listed site brings its own set of challenges. The design and approval process required patience and close coordination, with multiple Council and heritage approvals required throughout the project. At times, the requirements of heritage conservation and the contemporary standards of the National Construction Code presented competing considerations, requiring careful resolution and a highly considered design approach.
Heritage Restoration Techniques: Preserving Original Materials and Character
The restoration has involved a delicate balance between preserving the past and preparing the home for the future. Original materials, detailing and construction techniques have informed the restoration, while new elements, services and amenities are being integrated in a way that complements rather than competes with the existing architecture.
